Australia Day – the holidays are over …

The last days of the summer holidays … Noosa Council held the annual Australia Day celebrations at the river stage on the bank of Noosa River. An early riverside breakfast was followed by citizenship ceremonies. Then the crowd enjoyed the variety of entertainment by young artists, including some from the Creative Noosa music camp.

Lyndon Davis shared a musical message from Gubbi Gubbi people, playing didgeridoo. He has to be one of the best players anywhere.

The kids grooved to the music. Then followed African drums and dancing, with instruments to share among the audience. Young musicians who have taken part in Creative Noosa music camps over the holidays played and sang some great songs. Here are some of the pictures.

Young singer-songwriters gave very professional performances.

And the kids danced along once again, evident in the middle picture!

Thanks to everyone who took part. It was a great day to follow a fantastic school holiday program. To everyone who participated – thank you – and see you again next time!

Cartoon Funshops at the library

What’s this? Kids sitting around in the library in the holidays? What’s going on here? I was told young people wouldn’t be caught dead in the library – especially in school holidays!
Don’t panic. It’s one of Brian Doyle’s Cartoon Funshops.

Look at their faces – they haven’t been forced into it.
In fact, Brian’s opening remark was: “Nothing serious will happen here in the next 2 hours. So if you want to be serious – better leave now!”

So teachers, if you find your students looking at you in a funny way, or if occasionally they seem to be distracted by some random thought, or if even the front rows seem to be scribbling in their books, it’s our fault. Sorry!

Kids @ Art

We are all kids at heart, especially our art teachers who have freely given their time to run these art workshops with children. The sessions filled up quickly, and our limit must be kept to 20. However, if this turns out to be a success we will hold more art workshops in future. Did we have fun?

Upstaged – drama games

This workshop was designed by two actors who regularly perform in Noosa theatres. The idea was to give young people some insight into the acting game with fast and funny games. Who knows? You might find it’s the best thing you’ve ever done, and want to join a drama class this year.
The first thing is to get to know your fellow players and learn to work together.

Toys tell tales

Noosa Regional Gallery has a display with the title “Toys tell tales”. It features toys from the past, wood carved and beautiful. As part of the Holiday Blast program, NRG has agreed to provide their popular Family Open Days each Sunday from 14th January. We hope you will all go down to the Gallery and enjoy some art activity “hands-on” and see how the gallery works.

Altered Tees – Teen fashionistas

Ten girls and boys enjoyed a morning together – remaking simple T-shirts into unique wearable art using a variety of clothing surgery techniques. These included traditional skills of stitchery, ironing, machine sewing, and gluing, but also required imagination and flair! The pictures tell the story.

Once all the materials were assembled, and examples on display, we opened up the computer training room, temporarily converting it to a fashion factory. Computer screens make very convenient hanging spaces!

Thanks to Chantelle for sharing her creative genius, and to Melissa and Carrie for assisting the young people with tricky sewing. In two hours, we had a variety of fabulous new creations. Here are just a few.

What’s this? Kids in a classroom in the middle of the holidays? Never fear – even the front rows are sitting down the back scribbling silly pictures. It’s the second of our popular cartoon workshops – this one in Cooroy to give all the hinterland kids have a chance.

It was so hot, even the pens were splashing small blots of sweat around. But nobody cared, because the drawing was fun, wasn’t it?

WOW – Writers on Wednesday – Pat Flynn

Today ten young emerging authors met award winning author of books for their age, Pat Flynn, and shared the fun of a one-hour workshop. We shared ideas about how to get good story ideas, what you can do with characters, played some fun word games, and listened to Pat Flynn’s experiences with writing and getting published.

Next term, if we get enough people interested, Pat Flynn will be back to run a series of 8 writing classes for children aged 8 – 11 years.
